Samanthas charismatic prison-escapee drug-running husband Josh has taken nine year-old Harry and six year-old Sayle aboard the family yacht Wishbone and sailed off into the dark from Brisbane- heading for who knows where in Asia. Rosa loves the children as her own and has to get them back to their mother- or so she tells herself. As Rosa tries to track down Wishbone and her babies, the story takes us through New Caledonia to the steamy and morally complicated Philippines, where Rosa meets the enigmatic McGuire. Dodging tendrils from Joshs past drug dealings Rosa gets closer and closer to the truth- about Samantha, about Josh, about McGuire and about herself- her old life has never seemed further away . . .This book simply oozes experience!Whether we are talking the obviously authentic sailing passages, the deep analysis of her characters’ thoughts and motives, South-East Asia and its seemingly limitless complexities- both human and navigational- or even her understanding of Harry’s thoughts as she uses his eyes to keep the reader up-to-date with Josh and the kids, one must decide how much is direct experience and how much is keen observation using her background as a psychologist and her time in Asia on her own yacht. There is a lingering suspicion of the autobiographical- that Jill was Rosa in a past life, but we will never be sure, and that’s the way it should remain.
